Counsellors-In-Training

The counselor-in-training (CIT) program is designed for 17 year olds who have completed grade 11. The program is both academic and “hands on”. The textbook, “The Camp Counselor” is the textbook used for each weekday first period class and continues for a total of four weeks. The camp director along with both the boys and girls’ director will take turns in providing instruction based upon the text and their work experience at camp. Each week a quiz is administered followed by a final test covering the text material and class lectures at the conclusion of the four weeks. Passing the final test is but the first step towards a successful CIT mentorship.

In addition to coursework the applicant will have a “hands on” experience in regards to the daily life of a camp counselor. Each CIT will shadow a counselor and their unit during a week. CIT’s will also be rotated throughout the camp into a variety of assignments and work areas exposing them to the responsibilities a camp counselor assumes. A successful CIT apprenticeship prepares the young person for the next step of becoming a Camp Frenda employee/counselor. The CIT program runs from June 24-July 29, 2012 and costs $500. This fee includes the cost of the textbook, t-shirt, meals and lodging.

Please note, a successful apprenticeship improves one's chance of being employed at Camp Frenda but does not guarantee the young person employment for the following year. Many other variables affect future employment, such as camper enrollment numbers, high numbers of returning senior staff, and a large number of qualified first year applicants who are seeking employment. For these reasons the CIT program limits the number of individuals into the program four to six applicants per year.
